In 1913, the U.S. Navy introduced its first generation of plain denim work uniforms, consisting of a pullover-style smock paired with simple patch-pocket trousers. According to regulations, these work uniforms were only permitted to be worn when deemed necessary for specific work duties.
The olive-colored herringbone twill (HBT) work uniforms introduced in the early 1940s were intended to replace denim workwear. However, denim coveralls were not immediately phased out and continued to be worn until the mid-to-late 1940s.
